Joyful celebrations at Walsingham Festival in Brighton
More than 150 people from across the Diocese of Chichester gathered at St Paul’s Church, Brighton, on Saturday 17 October for the annual Walsingham Festival, a joyful celebration of faith, prayer and fellowship in honour of Our Lady of Walsingham.
The event began with a Solemn Mass celebrated by Bishop Will, joined by more than 20 concelebrating priests.
The sermon was delivered by Fr Ben Eadon, now Priest Administrator of the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham. Fr Ben previously served as Vicar of St Paul’s, regularly leading parishioners on pilgrimage from Brighton to the Norfolk shrine.
Reflecting on the biblical account of Mary visiting her cousin Elizabeth, Fr Ben encouraged attendees to share the joy of their faith, drawing parallels to Mary’s own example of discipleship.
Known as "England’s Nazareth," the Shrine at Walsingham has drawn pilgrims for centuries, focusing on devotion to the mother of Jesus and her role in Christian faith.
Following Mass, there was an opportunity to enjoy lunch together, renew friendships and meet fellow pilgrims from across Sussex.
In the afternoon, Bishop Will offered encouraging reflections on the life of the Church and the challenges and opportunities facing the Diocese. Fr Ben then led the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary, with reflections contributed by pilgrims of different ages and backgrounds, including a young participant in the Walsingham Youth Pilgrimage.
The Festival concluded with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament, led by Bishop Will, bringing a fitting end to a day centred on the presence and love of Christ.
Thanks were expressed to the churchwardens and congregation of St Paul's for their generous hospitality, and to everyone who contributed to the day's celebrations.
For those who gathered, the Festival was not simply an opportunity to celebrate a much-loved tradition, but following Mary's example, we are all called to encounter Christ, rejoice in his love and share that joy with others.
