Valuing and resourcing all our leaders, lay and ordained, is a high priority.
This programme stream invests in raising up, training and equipping our leaders so that:
- Ordained and lay leaders are resourced to lead mission effectively in their parish.
- Many more in our parishes realise a vocation and calling into some form of ministry (authorised, licensed, ordained).
The Excellent Leaders stream isn’t just about skills - it’s about forming people who lead with prayerfulness, faith, courage and conviction. When leaders flourish, churches flourish.

Aim
Our primary aim is for our ordained and lay leaders to feel well supported and equipped for the task of mission.Growth follows when leaders inspire and encourage their congregants to engage in mission and outreach.
Our second aim is to ensure the long-term future and thriving of the church in the diocese through an increase in vocations. God willing, we would like to double ordained vocations annually and increase Authorised Lay Ministry to 500 ALMs by 2035. An important part of this will be growth in the number of Self-Supporting Ministers to build a strong pipeline of leaders for the future.
What is available?
The stream will provide free or subsidised access to a range of courses, training and conferences, or where appropriate mentoring and/or coaching.
In addition to the our ongoing CMD and ALM programmes, we are partnering with:
- The Kindling Network – a pioneering national programme based at St Michael’s and All Angels Eastbourne for clergy wanting to reflect, pray, seek wise counsel and take practical steps forward in parish ministry. https://www.kindlingnetwork.co.uk/
- ‘Leading your Church into Growth’ – a diocesan course to encourage, inspire, and equip church leaders and congregations for lasting growth. https://www.leadingyourchurchintogrowth.org.uk
- CPAS. We are working with CPAS to discuss how their leadership training streams can best offer support – watch this space for further details. https://www.cpas.org.uk/
It is anticipated further partner organisations will join the offering in due course.
NB with the arrival of the new Director of Apostolic Life and the CMD Officer post in vacancy, the way Chichester supports its clergy through ongoing ministerial development and training is currently under review.
