The event coincided with Vocations Sunday on April 26th, an annual event intended to encourage individuals to consider what God might be calling them to.

Experienced clergy were on hand to share their insights and experience, with opening prayer and reflection from Bishop Ruth, followed by Michelle and Tom Jordan, an ordinand and spouse telling their story.

The Revd Elly McKay, a curate in the five church benefice of Upper Dicker and a Chaplain for YMCA Downs Link Group, spoke about being a Distinctive Deacon and Chaplain.

Vitalis Ngwambi, Racial Justice Co-Ordinator shared his calling to lead God’s diverse people with justice and compassion and this was followed by Revd Dr Jonathan Jong, who spoke about being a parish priest.

Emma from East Sussex was one of the attendees. She said: “Thank you for such a grace-filled day. I thought the programme worked very well and found the whole day incredibly nourishing. There was such a lovely mix of speakers, and I found every contribution inspiring, informative, resonant and encouraging. I particularly loved Giles opening and closing prayers, and look forward to allowing them to continue to work in, on and through me, supporting my discernment over the coming weeks and months.”

Giles Carpenter, Diocesan Director of Vocations reflected: “When people gather to reflect on how God might be calling them to serve, something hopeful begins to stir in the life of the church. The day was encouraging with honest conversation, helping people to think, talk and pray through the possibilities. Thank you to everyone who joined us at St Mary’s."
