Summer Pilgrimages Series
Discover the first in the Diocese of Chichester’s Summer Pilgrimage Series, inviting people of all ages to explore the beauty, history, and spirituality of Sussex.
This new series encourages residents and visitors to rediscover their local environment through simple, manageable journeys, whether on foot or cycling. Each destination offers an opportunity to enjoy fresh air, gentle exercise, and time together, while exploring and uncovering the rich Christian heritage woven into Sussex’s landscape.
Amber Jackson narrates the first of the pilgrimage video's in this series to give you a taster of what you will discover: You can watch it or listen here
The first route in the series, the Cuckmere Pilgrim Path, begins at St Andrew’s Church in Alfriston—often known as the “Cathedral of the Downs.” From here, pilgrims can follow a circular route linking seven historic rural churches, or choose a shorter journey visiting just one or two.
Pick up a Pilgrim Passport at St Andrew’s and collect stamps along the way as you follow the scallop shell markers guiding you through the landscape. Each stop offers space to pause and reflect, with interactive solar dials providing moments of stillness and connection.
Along the route, you’ll encounter remarkable sights including the Bloomsbury Group murals at Berwick, the iconic Long Man of Wilmington, and Lullington Church—one of the smallest churches in England. The trail offers a rich blend of sacred heritage, gentle exercise, and time outdoors.
Whether you’re seeking a spiritual retreat, a family day out, or simply a chance to enjoy Sussex at a slower pace, this accessible pilgrimage is a breath of fresh air.
After your walk, take time to enjoy Alfriston village—wander by the river, relax in a local café, or find a quiet picnic spot.
Start your journey this summer. Pack a lunch, gather friends or family, and discover the Cuckmere Pilgrim Path for yourself.
