Honorary Canons are members of a cathedral's Chapter and hold a recognised place within the life and ministry of the diocese.

The news was delivered personally during a visit to St Nicholas Children’s Centre in May 2026, where Lionel and Peter were reviewing work commissioned by the charity, including a recently completed water borehole. Reflecting they shared:

"We were both taken completely by surprise, were somewhat overwhelmed and at a loss to know what to say. This great honour is, however, a recognition of the work that has been done by all who have supported the trustees of the 'Friends' through their faithful and selfless generosity and encouragement for our projects."

Lionel and Peter will return to Nakuru for the collation service on 5th December.

The Diocese of Chichester has long enjoyed Companion Links with six dioceses across nine countries, including partnerships in West Africa since 1965 and in Kenya since 1967. These relationships have proved transformative and life-enhancing for many people, providing opportunities to learn from and share in the faith, witness, and ministry of Christians living in very different circumstances from those in the United Kingdom.

As they continue their close work with the Diocese of Nakuru, Lionel and Peter remain always willing to tell others about the inspiring children, young people, and staff of St Nicholas Children’s Centre.
