The Bishop of Horsham, Ruth Bushyager, joined the celebrations at the official launch of Café Neuro in Burgess Hill, a new initiative by the Christian charity Befriended. The café aims to provide a welcoming and informative space for older people, carers and those living with neurocognitive conditions such as dementia, Parkinson's disease and strokes.

Founded by Gail Millar, Befriended was established to make a meaningful difference in the lives of older individuals facing loneliness, isolation, and cognitive challenges. Gail, who now serves as the charity’s Chief Executive, welcomed guests alongside Bishop Ruth, who became Patron of Befriended in 2021—a pivotal year of growth and renewed vision for the organisation.

Gail Millar said: "Befriended is committed to providing activities and a place in the community where people can meet together, find support, make friends and know they are seen and heard. Together and one by one we are committed to making life better one smile at a time."

Also in attendance were the Mayor of Burgess Hill, Stuart Condie and the Divisional Commander of the Salvation Army Major Tracey Palmer, showing strong community support for the café’s mission.

During the event, Bishop Ruth spent time chatting with attendees, listening to their stories and posed for photos with Gail Millar and volunteers. One attendee shared her story of the life changing impact attending the cafe has made, she received help and support in filling out forms to get a Blue Badge. Her blue badge arrived in post this week, she is overjoyed.

The launch of café neuro is in part a response to the vision of the charity, which together with local churches, is to bring an end to loneliness and isolation among older people living in Mid Sussex. All our activities are places of joy, hope, warmth, welcome, fun and friendship.
