Bishop Moth, who has been the Bishop of Arundel and Brighton since 2015, replaces the retiring Cardinal Vincent Nichols and will be officially installed in his new role at Westminster Cathedral on 14 February.

The Bishop said, “Richard has been a steadfast friend and partner in the gospel, marking his early years here by sharing in the Year of Mercy. It seems that in the whole world, the cathedrals of Arundel and Chichester were the only example of an ecumenical observance, each having a holy door for that year. Bishop Richard is a Canon of Honour of Chichester cathedral.

We assure him of our prayers and good wishes for the ministry that lies ahead.”

Bishop Moth becomes the 12th Archbishop of Westminster, the new leader of the Catholic Church in England and Wales and has been appointed by the Pope. He said, “I am moved greatly by the trust that Pope Leo has placed in me, in appointing me to the Diocese of Westminster.”

"As I prepare to move to the diocese, I am so grateful for the support being given to me by Cardinal Vincent Nichols at this time. He has given dedicated service to the diocese and will be missed greatly."
