A breathtaking new immersive light installation is set to captivate audiences this Christmas with a dynamic visual retelling of foundational moments from the Christian narrative. Projected within the historic interior of The Church of the Annunciation, Brighton, the video artwork, In the Beginning, transforms the sanctuary into a moving tapestry of light, colour, and sacred symbolism.

Using the church’s architecture as a living canvas, the installation layers animated illustrations, cosmic imagery, and radiant typography over the altar and surrounding walls. Viewers are guided through scenes of creation, incarnation, and revelation as ancient scripture is illuminated in a contemporary visual language.

Among the projected sequences are:

  • “Let There Be Light” blazing across the altar as vibrant cosmic patterns sweep through the rafters.
  • Ethereal depictions of Mary and the Angel, complementing the church’s traditional iconography.
  • “And the Word Was Made Flesh” emblazoned in luminous lettering, echoing the message of John’s Gospel.
  • Hand-drawn figures moving across landscapes, evoking the journey of humanity through time.
  • The result is a seamless fusion of digital artistry and sacred space—an encounter designed to inspire reflection, wonder, and renewed appreciation for the biblical story.

“We wanted to create an experience that feels both ancient and new,” says Vicar Anthony Murley, the creator of the project. “This installation invites people to witness scripture not as static text, but by using living, unfolding light. The light which shines in the darkness, and light of the world born at Christmas.”

A New Way of Experiencing Sacred Story

In the Beginning is part of a growing initiative in the Church of the Annunciation to bring immersive art into heritage and spiritual settings with a solid theological foundation. By integrating projection, animation, and architectural storytelling, the installation creates a contemplative yet innovative environment that appeals to visitors of all ages and backgrounds.

The project highlights the church’s rich historic character while introducing a modern medium that enhances, rather than replaces, its sacred atmosphere as it witnesses anew to the Christmas story.
