Local charities you can support this advent

As we approach Advent and Christmas, churches across the diocese are preparing to support those whom the festive season can be a time of struggle rather than comfort. With rising living costs placing growing pressure on households, local charities are working to bring hope and practical support to those who need it most.

Family Support Work (FSW), the Diocese of Chichester’s own charity, continues its work with families across Sussex, providing essential items, foodbank items and emotional care as well as Christmas gifts for the children of the families the charity supports. At a time when rising costs can make even everyday essentials feel out of reach, FSW’s family support practitioners bring light and stability to households under pressure.

YMCA DownsLink Group, including the chaplaincy team at YMCA DownsLink, offers vital support to young people experiencing homelessness or mental health challenges. As winter draws in, gifts, warm clothing, and donations to their supported housing projects help ensure that no young person faces Christmas alone or without shelter.

Turning Tides in Worthing and across West Sussex has again launched its seasonal appeal for food items, toiletries and warm clothing for adults experiencing homelessness. Their commitment to helping people find a route out of homelessness remains a lifeline for many, supported by volunteers, churches and local community groups.

In Brighton and Hove, Brighton & Hove City Mission continues to serve those on the margins through its food bank, schools and outreach projects, bringing both practical help and the message of God’s love in action.

Meanwhile, many of our parishes and schools will again support The Children’s Society through their annual Christingle services, raising funds that give children across the country the chance of a brighter future.

Whether through giving food, gifts, or financial support, or simply holding these organisations and the people they serve in prayer, there are many ways to support this work of love and justice in our communities.
