Christ’s Hospital: Opening Doors through Bursaries
For centuries, Christ’s Hospital has stood as a beacon of opportunity, founded in the City of London in 1552 with a mission to provide an outstanding education for children in need. Based just outside Horsham since 1902, the school continues to honour its charitable roots by offering extensive bursary provision – transforming the lives of young people from a wide range of backgrounds.
Christ’s Hospital is now extending its reach even further, launching a new day bursary programme for families who live within commuting distance of the school. This initiative opens the door to a Christ’s Hospital education for children who may not wish to board, but who would thrive in the school’s distinctive and nurturing environment.
‘We’re determined to ensure that this extraordinary opportunity is accessible to families in our local area,’ says Crawley-born and bred Matthew Judd, who joined Christ’s Hospital as Head and CEO at the start of the academic year. ‘We want parents across the region to know that Christ’s Hospital is very much their school too. Our aim is to make sure financial circumstances are never a barrier to a child’s potential.’
Today, nearly 80% of Christ’s Hospital pupils receive some level of financial support, with many on full bursaries. The school’s ethos – academic ambition grounded in compassion and service – ensures pupils from all walks of life learn side by side in an environment that values both excellence and opportunity.
As part of his first term in office, Mr Judd has been reaching out to families across the Diocese and Sussex, encouraging them to explore what the school can offer. Christ’s Hospital has a long and proud history of educating the sons and daughters of clergy, and the new day bursaries provide a fresh opportunity for families connected to the Church to consider applying.
‘Christ’s Hospital’s charitable purpose has always been to give children of promise, but limited means, the chance to flourish,’ Mr Judd explains. ‘We would love to welcome more families who see the value of a broad, ambitious education delivered within a supportive community.’
For prospective pupils, the benefits extend far beyond the classroom. Christ’s Hospital offers an exceptional all-round education, combining academic stretch with rich opportunities in music, sport, art and drama. The school’s well-known marching
band, thriving programme of co-curricular activities and strong sense of community make it a place where young people grow in confidence and character.
