Bishop attends service in Rome at which John Henry Newman is declared a Doctor of the Church
The Bishop of Chichester, Dr Martin Warner, is part of a Church of England delegation attending a service at St Peter’s Basilica in Rome tomorrow (Saturday 1 November) at which Pope Leo XIV will formally declare John Henry Newman (1801-1890) a Doctor of the Church.
Cardinal Newman’s Anglican heritage shaped his deep reverence for Scripture, tradition, and conscience, grounding the theological and spiritual insights that later enriched his Catholic faith.
The Holy Father will designate Newman as an official co-patron saint of education, together with St. Thomas Aquinas, at the closing Mass of the Vatican’s Jubilee of the World of Education which started on Monday and ends on Saturday- the Feast of All Saints.
The Saint will be declared the 38th doctor of the Church .
Cardinal José Tolentino de Mendonça, the prefect of the Dicastery for Culture and Education, said Newman is an “extraordinary educator and great inspiration for the philosophy of education.”
