Pension Improvement proposal to support clergy well-being
The Church of England has announced some very positive news regarding Clergy Pensions this morning. The Archbishops’ Council, drawing on analysis and recommendations from the Church of England Pensions Board, is proposing a package of improvements.
The improvements include restoring the target pension level to two-thirds of pensionable stipend, as well as increasing pensions that have come into payment since 2011.
These proposals will be considered by General Synod this July, with potential implementation after April 2026 as changes to the Scheme rules are required.
Bishop Martin commented: "This is very welcome news that the Church has been seeking for some time, and will come as a huge relief to our clergy as they consider their retirement plans."
This follows a debate at our own Diocesan Synod last Saturday which called for urgent work on seeking to restore the level of pension benefit.
