Pastoral Supervision

Regular pastoral supervision is recommended as a means for clergy to reflect on the impact of their ministry upon themselves and others.

Good pastoral supervision is:

  • a safe space - characterised by trust, respect, confidentiality, support and openness that gives the supervisee freedom to explore the issues arising in their ministry.
  • theologically informed – observant of theological understanding, vocational calling, Christian traditions, and perspectives.
  • contextually sensitive – attentive to the supervisee’s location and role within a diverse community.
  • a way of growing - in competence, self-awareness, quality of presence, accountability, response to challenge, mutual learning.
  • psychologically informed – draws on relevant psychological theory and insight to illuminate intra-personal and inter-personal dynamics.
