The Bishop of Lewes, Richard Jackson has announced the appointment of the new Diocesan Interfaith Advisor.
The Revd Dr Godfrey Kesari, Vicar of Southwater since November 2010, will represent the diocese in the national Presence and Engagement network alongside his parish responsibilities.
Bishop Richard said: “I’m delighted to welcome Godfrey. He brings great insight and knowledge to the role and this will undoubtedly help us develop our partnership with the interfaith network.”
Originally from India, Dr Godfrey trained for the ministry at the United Theological College, Bangalore. In addition to his parochial responsibilities, Godfrey has been tutoring Reader candidates. His PhD thesis, The Atonement Creating Unions: An Exploration in Inter-Religious Theology has recently been published. Godfrey will be taking on his new role from January 1st.
The previous post holder, Canon Dr Andrew Wingate, will now become Associate Inter-Faith Advisor, in support of Godfrey, and will cover mainly Brighton, Hove, Worthing and Lewes. He will also be the educational resource, supported by the Revd David Broad, priest of St Michael’s Lewes.
Bishop Richard said: “Andrew has revitalised the diocesan interfaith work since his retirement here three years ago, and we are delighted he will continue to support this ministry in the new Diocesan interfaith group structure. The group’s aim is to build stronger relationships with our friends in other faiths, especially as we increasingly seek to work together in social action and other areas of shared interest.”
Bishop Laurie Green will be responsible for Hastings, Bexhill and Eastbourne area. Cynara Davies, Education Officer in the Cathedral, will cover the west end of the Diocese and Canon Jonathan Baldwin, Chaplain of Gatwick Airport, will focus on Crawley and Horsham area, alongside Godfrey.
