The Diocese of Chichester covering East and West Sussex is predominantly rural and we are blessed with amazingly beautiful countryside and scores of picturesque country churches. Our churches are at the heart of our communities as they have been for generations sharing in people’s lives, sharing in the celebrations and being right alongside them in the hard times.
In recent years our countryside has faced some severe challenges with reductions in transport and closure of many shops and village pubs. Climate changes and economic recession have also severely affected farmers and other local businesses. Rural poverty and isolation are real issues for many in what to many visitors can seem an idyllic environment. In the midst of this our churches are called to face up to the challenges.
Information on the location of churches and their facilities is available through the Church Near You website. Details of that and other church organisations involved in the countryside can be accessed through our related links section.
Information and advice within the diocese on rural issues is provided by the Church and Countryside group and by the Rural Officer, who links with organisations supporting rural concerns in Sussex.
For any particular questions regarding rural issues please contact the Diocesan Rural and Environment Officer, the Rev Mark Betson, 01403 891367.
