People from parishes across the diocese were commended today (Saturday 10 March) for the part they played in the annual Ride and Stride sponsored fundraising event which took place on the second Saturday of September 2017.
The guests were gathered in St Peter’s church, Upper Beeding and welcomed by Vicar Emma Graeme and county organiser Graham Pound, as well as all four archdeacons from the diocese.
The event last year raised over £49,000 for Sussex Historic Churches Trust (SHCT). Last year the Trust made grants of £104,000 and its treasurer, John Barkshire said: “This goes towards meeting the costs of looking after our churches and the trust is in good shape for the future.” (St Peter’s has seen the benefit of a grant from SHCT which helped towards the costs for repairing it’s chancel roof.)
Mrs Susan Pyper, The Lord-Lieutenant of West Sussex, presented the trophies and certificates to all the individual and team winners, and under 16’s, and told them how exceptional they were. She said: “Although it might seem a small thing that you have done, it actually makes a huge difference. Next year we want to make this event bigger and better and get more churches involved.”
This was also a sentiment echoed by the Chair of SHCT, Christopher Whittick, who explained how more churches should encourage participating teams for next year as the churches directly benefit from the money raised as well as being able to apply for additional grants for works to do with repair and restoration. He said to those present that they were the “VIPs of the day” and their efforts were greatly helping to maintain our church buildings for the future.
Church registration is now open for 2018 here
